Our story

During Covid, Chris was invited to join Let's Go Read, a book-subscription club started by two other dads. The idea was simple: post children a box each month with independent picture books, activities, and learning booklets. It expanded into after-school reading clubs run with paying schools.

Eighteen months later the funding ran out. The company wound up.

Chris bought the remaining stock, including several hundred copies of Superbat and I Really Need a Wee, and started sending them to local Somerset schools as part of Innatus Digital's B Corp giving.

The reason Let's Go Read didn't work became obvious in hindsight. Parents who could afford a subscription had already bought their children books. Parents who couldn't, certainly couldn't spare £20 a month. And schools didn't have the funding for after-school clubs either. The money was never going to come from the families or schools who needed it most.

So we started Story Seeds. Somerset only, to begin with, because it's better to do one county well than spread too thin. Innatus routes its charitable giving straight into it. The mission is simple: every child should own a book that actually speaks to them. Not just any book. One they'd choose for themselves.

Since then it's grown to include card and board games, audiobooks, and Yoto players. Everyone reads differently, and that matters.

Who we are

Story Seeds is run by Chris and Ella Ryan, parents of Dougie (7) and founders of Innatus Digital, a Somerset-based B Corp. Our team includes a qualified teacher with SEN experience, which keeps the work grounded in what actually helps a classroom.

How we’re funded

Story Seeds is currently funded entirely by Innatus Digital. We're looking for more partners so we can reach more schools.

What We Do

Story Seeds CIC collaborates with schools, teachers, publishers, and corporate companies to provide high quality books and additional resources that make a real difference. Our initiatives include:

Book Gifting for Literacy Enrichment

We gift new books to children to take home and enjoy with their families. Book ownership enhances reading skills and inspires a love of reading outside the classroom.

Supplementary Resources

We offer additional resources for some books at cost to help engage and add further educational value to the story through activities.

Library Support and Access Initiative

We support school libraries with donations of books and resources helping to replenish and update their collections to benefit all students.

Safeguarding

  • Books and games are delivered by post, courier, or dropped at school reception.
  • We are never solo with children. Competition visits are always accompanied by school staff.
  • Our team includes a qualified teacher with SEN experience who holds an enhanced DBS certificate (DBS+). They lead any activity that involves direct contact with children.
